[Dxspider-support] DXSpider install problem

Whilst following the installation instructions, 
http://www.dxcluster.org/main/installation_en-1.html#ss1.1 I fail on making 
Curses-1.06
on my Mandrake 9.1

Making a guess for $inc and/or $libs...
Writing Makefile for Curses

If I continue and try to 'make test'  I get lots of errors thrown up.

Perl installed is v5.8.0 built for i386-linux-thread-multi

Hope I have given you enough to go on.  Any suggestions please?
