I have DXSpider working on 2 different machines. It works fine.

What I would say though is that it is becoming more difficult, as time
goes by, to keep the instructions usable for all possible working
configurations of perl.

The best way to install the modules for Linux is to use cpan (perl
-MCPAN -eshell). You will need to do some configuration when you first
use it, but taking all the defaults and answering some simple questions
as to where you are and picking nearish mirrors will get you going.

For Windows, the ppm package seems to work OK and does roughly the same
job.

On the subject of Windows, it appears that Activestate perl 5.8.0 cannot
be made to work because, for some unaccountable reason, there is no
DB_File package available for it. However the Activestate perl 5.6.1
build 633 is just fine.

The Curses problem I will try and solve another way. I will see if I can
put a tarfile up on the webserver with the tiny patch needed to make it
work with perl 5.8.0. The Author seems unwilling to update it himself.
