memory has more impact then processor - more data can be cached in memory and also
the disk caching into memory ....
 
spider runs a lot faster on linux then windows - much OS less overhead
also - try not to run X-Windows on a linux server - for the same reason ...
 
A long time a go we once managed to run NT server 3.51 without the graphical environment
and it was incredibly fast (in those days)
 
if you want to compare a few spiders:
 
on0nol.dyndns.org:9000         compaq deskpro Pentium 166MMX 128Mb
on1afn.dyndns.org:9000         homebuild Pentium II 333 392Mb - but running a lot of other stuff too...
 
both on Redhat 7.x
