Discussion you want, well here's my opinion.

Sysops should really ask themselves whether they need to see 600-700
nodes and 3000+ users to run an effective node.  At one point a few
years ago I ran "wide open" until I looked at the bandwidth and CPU
cycles being consumed to process "largely irrelevant, useless" data.
Does having all this user data on a world wide basis change how how the
cluster/nodes are used?  Does it cut down on the "ann/full" messages? 
Do people used directed talk messages?  I believe the answers are no.
If sysops spent some time setting up regional groups of nodes the
problem would probably end up being largely non-existant.  I work to
ensure redundant sources of spots, expecially during contest periods. 
Beyond the spots, I believe, is largely not worth the effort!

ps - I've had more requests recently to have a user's filters applied
when he does sh/dx, that to know where G1TLH is connected on the
cluster.
