Especially considering that you have to be there to see if the console 
is indeed showing the relevant output 8-) I did it that way, btw.

It forces the usage of the specified tty even if it appears to be in 
use: I found that sometimes, especially when the process is killed 
abruptly but also when terminating normally, the tty is not freed and 
the following open would fail.
