Some comments against your last message.

Agree.  This is the first time I've ever seen this behaviour, which is
why I was looking at my recent install of Perl 5.8.

No evidence of a user doing an httpd query.

No outbound connect on-going at the time of the crashes.  However, I
happened to be watching in a debug window and saw a suspicious event.  I
noticed that my node had stalled out.  And then, a node disconnected
from me (not sure why).  Once that node disconnected, activity restarted
on my node.
