What I do (as root) is:-

ln -s /spider/perl/*dbg /usr/bin
ln -s /spider/perl/console.pl /usr/bin/dx

and, in another window (or pseudo terminal if you are not using X), I
do:

watchdbg

which will do (nearly) the same as watching the output from the node. 

To start a sysop console type: dx 
at any shell prompt.
