PLEASE read further down the original message: change /etc/inittab

HOWEVER, there seems to have been a freudian slip somewhere, the above
line should read:-

DXSPIDER_ROOT=/home/gb7tst /spider/perl/cluster.pl

and you can just type that into a convenient shell for testing purposes.
