I'm running Ubuntu 5.10 (kernel 2.6.15 self-compiled) here with no  
problems.

Are you getting any error messages?
Are the ax25 and mkiss modules loaded?

I suggest that you try using simple applications like 'listen',  
'mheard' and 'connect' and debug the AX.25 setup with them before  
attempting to use AX.25 with dxspider.
