In Ubuntu to respawn you have to make a file in /etc/event.d/
Like tty7
# tty7 - getty
#
# This service maintains a getty on tty7 from the point the system is
# started until it is shut down again.
start on runlevel 2
start on runlevel 3
stop on runlevel 0
stop on runlevel 1
stop on runlevel 4
stop on runlevel 5
stop on runlevel 6
respawn
exec /spider/start.sh tty7

Thanks to everyones suggestions, especially to SM6U/Rickard who hit
on the solution.
Ubuntu 7.10 doesn't use inittab, but files placed in event.d
(Upstart??). I've not found anything intelligible documentation yet,
to work out how to respawn Spider.
