Have you got a version of cvs for windows installed? Eg. WinCVS or 
Tortoise CVS? In either case you should be able to do:-

cvs update -d

in a cmd> window. Or just use the graphical interface those packages 
provide instead.

The *crucial* thing is '-z3' no longer works (unfortunately).
