Please note exactly where the " characters go, they don't go where you
have them in your examples below:-

DX:2345:respawn:su -c "perl /spider/perl/cluster.pl > /dev/tty9" sysop

SP:2345:respawn:su -c "DXSPIDER_ROOT=/home/sysop2/spider perl
/home/sysop2/spider/perl/cluster.pl > /dev/tty8" sysop2

try checking the last one by logging in as root and typing:-

su -c "DXSPIDER_ROOT=/home/sysop2/spider perl
/home/sysop2/spider/perl/cluster.pl > /dev/tty8" sysop2

all on one line.

It should a) run and b) in a "ps aux" should be owned by sysop2
