wonder what made it work right now on your machine?

If no magic solution shows up I will try and put Suse 11.3
32 Bits on the machine. It still comes with an older Perl Version
perl 5, version 12, subversion 1 (v5.12.1) built for i586-linux-thread-multi

On the new machine here with SuSe 11.4 - 64 Bits it is
perl 5, version 12, subversion 3 (v5.12.3) built for 
x86_64-linux-thread-multi

No idea how much difference that really makes.

Very frustrating situation.
