Sounds to me like some kind of user file corruption. I suggest you 
rebuild the user file database from backup.

1. stop the node
2. cd /spider/data
3. perl user_asc (or one of the older ones (.o[oooo]), have a look at 
them to select one that look reasonable).
4. restart the node.
