Hello Dirk, many thanks for the detailed responses to my requests for help - it all looks very 
helpful and it will take me a while to digest it all but I have already done 'telinit q' followed by 
update_sysop.pl as you suggested and that seems successfully to have introduced the most 
recent changes I made to DXVars.pm.

In your response to my question 3 about updating cty.dat etc, you refer to running 
create_prefix.pl after overwriting files in /spider/data - can that be done with the cluster still 
running or does 'telinit q' need to be used again beforehand to stop the node and then again 
after running create_prefix.pl to restart it?

All understood about not allowing non-privileged users to see the logs; I'll have to log in as 
sysop whenever I want to see who has connected and disconnected to the node recently.
