It's not "necessary", no. At least not yet. I do. however, foresee a 
time when the process of backporting fixes to the master branch will 
become too difficult to continue. It's bad enough now, as I am 
discovering as try to stop our new contest nuisance bot disrupting 
(larger) [hf?] contests.

But it really *would* help if more than 15% of the nodes updated to the 
latest release. It isn't as if it's difficult or time consuming.
