I think the only way to approach this for your purposes is to have a 
dummy clone of the spider tree somewhere in your VM creation system(s) 
and to test that dummy with 'git describe --long | cut -d'-' -f2 ' - 
gives you the build no. DO always use --long because, should the current 
version match a tag then the build no won't come out ('cos it would be 0).
