Hi Mike.
This is actually a deficiency in the command ‘service’ provided by Debian/Ubuntu.
Simply use “sudo systemctl dxspider start” instead
If dxspider isn’t starting at boot, issue this command to create a symbolic link that indicates the service should be started automatically:
sudo systemctl dxspider enable
This article has more info on the problem with the service command https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-27715

Subject: [Dxspider-support] New node not starting as a service.
I have built a new node which ultimately will replace the current MX0NCA-2
The new node has MariaDb installed and the node is happily using MariaDb with all the spots showing in phpMyAdmin. The node is working perfectly and I have MRTG graphs working beautifully see dxc.mx0nca.uk/mrtg/stats.html . Ver 1.57 build 517. (This test node is running as G4KAN-9)
BUT the node won’t start automatically from reboot – although it does restart if a ‘shut’ is run from the console.
If I try a ‘sudo systemctl dxspider start’ the node starts fine – but it is not running as a service and again doesn’t start after a reboot.
If I try ‘sudo service dxspider start’ I get:
Failed to get properties: Unit name mariadb-extra at .socket is neither a valid invocation ID nor unit name.
Failed to get properties: Unit name mariadb at .socket is neither a valid invocation ID nor unit name.
Any ideas team?
