Brian,
       As dx spider is running a telnet data protocol - let’s ignore dx-spider for a moment… 


On the machine where you are running dx-spider can you 

  - telnet into that machine 
      Telnet 127.0.0.1 (private ip)

This by default will be port 23.

  If this works then let’s try a public ip interface 

       Telnet <gb0vax.x.y> (public ip)

What will these items prove ?

Your host machine is accepting telnet requests to the default port.
