Hi all,

Following on from the long thread about self-spotting and de-duplication.

Now that more contests are allowing self-spotting, you may wish to enable it on your own dxspider node.

The default is set to allow self spotting on 23cms and above.

To enable it for all frequencies, please enter the following into your cluster console:

set/var $Spot::minselfspotqrg 0

The default time for self spots to be allowed is once every ten minutes. Some contests allow this to be as regular as once every three minutes but I’ve never seen anyone self-spot this often.

To change this from ten minutes down to three minutes (180 seconds), please enter the following into your cluster console:

set/var $Spot::dupage 180

I don’t believe these changes persist across node restarts so you need to add the two commands into your /spider/scripts/startup file as well as typing them into your console.

Even though I’m a contester, I don’t operate in assisted categories so these changes won’t directly affect me but I feel that we provide a network for the users and as self-spotting is being allowed in more contests, I think we should adjust our settings to allow this.

I don’t feel we’re going to be overloaded with spots, I don’t think too many people will be self spotting throughout an entire contest and even fewer will even consider doing it every three minutes. The amount of traffic generated by doing this will pale into insignificance compared to [say] the WWA traffic we’ve seen this month.

Obviously not all node sysops will agree and not all sysops will want to do this but if you’re happy to, I’m sure it would be appreciated by the contesters.

Thanks,
