England Hockey e-zine: September 2009
Welcome to the September e-zine from England Hockey.
For many readers the season is just about to start while for some, including the England Hockey League, the 2009-2010 season is already well and truly underway.
In the England Hockey League (EHL) Men's Premier Division, East Grinstead have started where they left off last season, sitting atop the table thanks to wins over Cannock and Brooklands MU while in the Women's Premier Division Reading, new to the top division this year, are already showing they will be a force to be reckoned having recorded victories over neighbours Slough and Birmingham University.
Following the start of the EHL season, the European Cup Trophy Tour has made its first stops at Reading and East Grinstead in recent weeks and will be at Surbiton this coming Saturday and Cannock the following week. Why not pop along to see the trophy and have your pictures taken with it?
The start of the new season will see many hockey players, coaches, umpires and spectators getting a grip on the new rules of the game which include the 'self pass' rule and the rule on free hits inside the 23 metre area. With this in mind we thought it would be helpful to signpost anyone interested towards the electronic copy of the Rules of Hockey 2009 which can be found in the Officiating section of the England Hockey website (www.englandhockey.co.uk/officiating). Also in that section, visitors will find recently published guidance for umpires implementing the new rules.
As we have approached the season, England Hockey has also received a number of enquiries regarding pitch markings sparked in part by the new rules. As a result, a statement was released on the England Hockey website and can be found in the Facilities section at www.englandhockey.co.uk/facilities.
Talking of facilities, keep an eye on the website this coming Monday (5 October) for the launch of the forthcoming Capital Investment Programme.
Next year's Samsung Hockey Champions Trophy in Nottingham is approaching and the volunteer recruitment drive is well and truly underway now. The organising committee is looking for around 250 dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to join the Champion Crew and help make the tournament a roaring success. To find out more and to register your interest in joining the Champion Crew visit www.wct2010.com/volunteers.
Tickets for the Women's Champions Trophy and Men's Four Nations Test Series go on sale next week for a special "early bird" booking period to England Hockey Members, at www.wct.2010.com. England Hockey Members also receive up to 30% off the ticket price to watch the hottest hockey event in England during 2010!
Tickets go on sale to the general public at the end of October but if you want to take advantage of the early bird priority booking period and all the other benefits of England Hockey Membership, please join us at www.englandhockey.co.uk/membership.
Finally for the moment, don't forget to buy your tickets for the England v Scotland indoor clashes at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on Monday 7 December. With guaranteed goals and plenty of exciting, fast paced action these two matches between England and Scotland's men and women are sure to be a great pre-Christmas treat. Prices start at £7 for Under 18s and just £15 for adults so get yours soon! To book tickets call The Ticket Factory on 0844 338 8000 or click here to buy them online.
Good luck for the season ahead.
