Pelicans great run in the EHB Ladies Masters Plate ended in great spirit on Saturday when they were beaten by a very strong St Albans team.
The game was played at a high pace throughout and was a great example of total commitment from both teams. St Albans had a number of individually skilful players who are current National League regulars, but this was counterbalanced by the grit and determination shown by the Pelicans team as a whole.
The game began at a steady pace with both teams building periods of attack, it remained balanced up until the eleventh minute when St Albans converted a short corner. With their noses ahead they then worked an open play goal to double the lead.
This stung Pelis into more forceful play resulting in a short corner which Kath Johnson struck home with venom.
Just before half time and with Pelis on the ascendency St Albans struck a cruel blow by increasing their lead to 4-1.
At half time Pelis still felt the game was there for the chasing and in fairness they had retained as much possession as St Albans throughout the first half.
St Albans started the second half fired up and within 3 minutes had scored another impressive individual goal. Still Pelis continued to battle for every ball and create chances of their own but again somewhat against the run of play at the time St Albans converted another short corner to take their lead to 5-1. In the last 20 mins St Albans added 3 more goals as energy levels began to drop.
On reflection St Albans were the undoubted stronger team and fully deserved their win, Pelis wish them all the very best in the final and can be very proud of the fact that they really made St Albans work hard for their win and fought for every ball and decision from start to finish.
Carol Tupper in goal made some fantastic saves from some sublime shots, Tracy Bower, Nicki Lankfer, Jane Major, Sue Picton, Kate Lemon and Jane Moore work tirelessly in defence under immense pressure all game.
Across Midfield Tracy Brown, Kirsten Kerry and Kath Johnson put relentless pressure on their St Albans counterparts and created some real opportunities for the forward line.
In attack Andrea Glover spearheaded countless runs supported by Justeen Lankfer, Sarah Sagrott and Sally Arnold who all created drives into the St Albans D to set up shots.
Thanks go to Mel Drohan, Hannah Major and Rebecca Reavell for managing the team on the day and to all the club members who came and supported.
"We have had a fantastic run in this National competition and to think that a modest sized club like ours can claim to be in the top 4 in the country at this level just shows how powerful team spirit and determination can be. We now look forward to starting the journey again next season."
