I am running it successfully on RedHat 7.1.

One of the things you DON'T have to do is compile up and load
IO-Socket-1.20.tgz. Also Net::Telnet doesn't test properly, but it
installs well enough to work.

GB7TLH, when it is on (as now for instance) is running on the 7.1
machine.
