I might be suspicious of somewhat more fundamental problems with the
PC.  As I recall, the 1 Jan date was the date shown with non-Y2K
motherboards after 2000.  I'd be thinking about problems at the
motherboard/BIOS level, especially since dates on the PC seem to be
jumping around.  I guess anything's possible, but this is my best guess.
