Jon, G0NVD contacted me several days ago, asking for help locating and stopping the abuse he was suffering on the cluster.
I told him to install and run my AR User program. With this program, any user can easily determine which nodes the abusive spots are coming from. This is thanks to Dirk, who added the code to Dx Spider to send to my program a lot of data which users don't normally see. One of these items is the node of the spotter.
All any user has to do is enter "sh/dx by g0nvd" and he finds all the spots entered by anyone using that callsign. If the node where the spots originated at is AR Cluster, all anyone needs to do is log in to it and enter "sh/log g0nvd" and they will be told the IP address and times that g0nvd was logged in. Using the IP address and a WHOIS lookup, the ISP for the user can be found. Then the ISP can be contacted with an official complaint. This whole process does not involve any sysop action at all.
The problem is when the node is Dx Spider. I found which nodes the abuser was using, but was unable to get them to tell me the IP address. It told me "not allowed". I later figured out that if Jon connected to these nodes and did a sh/log, he would be told what IP addresses his call had been logged in from. Then he could carry on with the process of determining who the abuser was.
This works well except in cases where the Dx Spider or AR Cluster nodes are using my proxy program called winsock.exe. A side effect of this program is that all users appear to be coming from the IP address of 127.0.0.1. However, the number of nodes using this program is small. This winsock.exe program logs the IPs. However they are not available to the cluster users. This does require sysop help to determine what they are. Fortunately all the sysops running this program are responsive to user requests for help.
