Some comments about Linux distributions:

First take a look at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_distribution
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions

Summary in:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Linux_distributions

The oldest distributions are Slackware and Debian, we all know if you
really want to learn Linux use Slackware most of it you have to do
yourself.

Fedora (Redhat), Suse, Debian and Ubuntu have the most packages.

Debian and Gentoo are running on the most variety of systems.

Debian, Gentoo and Ubuntu use dpkg and apt package system, this system
has one big advantage dependencies rules and update rules are very
solid.

RPM and YUM from Fedora and Suse are sometimes a bit sloppy in their
packages management system.

To give an opinionated conclusion:

If you have low knowledge about Linux and running a PC-type of system,
I will advice you to use Ubuntu. Ubuntu is easy to install, it has a
good package management system. Next to it, they garantee every 6
months an new distribution release.

If you have a high knowledge about Linux and don't need graphical
environment, you can use Debian or Gentoo. Use between Debian and
Gentoo depending on the processor you use. Next to it Gentoo will
compile every package on your system, makes it in theory faster, but
need more installation time.

My personal favourite is Debian, because they have the largest number
of packages, it runs on a large number of systems. The best argument
they use the dpkg and apt system for the package management.

In summary: Linux newbies use Ubuntu! Linux gurus use Debian or
Slackware, but if you are a real guru you made your own distributions
;-)
