Hi Mike,
Firstly, thanks for upgrading.  secondly, try this...

Mke a copy of your existing tree by running 'tar zcvf spider.tgz spider' 
from the sysop directory.
Now untar CVSLatest.tgz over your existing installation.  Now bring it 
up and you should have a shiny new spider, complete with all your 
existing data.  If you go to the root of your spider dir you should be 
able to do a 'cvs update -d' now.
