Works ok on Debian for me after fixing: 

ERROR: Mrtg will most likely not work properly when the environment
       variable LANG is set to UTF-8. Please run mrtg in an environment
       where this is not the case. Try the following command to start:

       env LANG=C /usr/bin/mrtg all 

I changed locales to en_US.utf and fixed permission problem with
/var/lib/mrtg

What error did you get?

Hi all,
Has anyone set up the latest MRTG as yet?  The instructions in the 
manual are now incorrect by the looks of it and I would like to correct 
them and also install MRTG here :)
Any ideas please?
