In the 'user_asc' file. It is up to the sysop to back these up somewhere 
sensible.

It is a user concept. Nodes have to explicitly allowed to connect as 
nodes (these days) with a set/spider or whatever. This is, in effect, 
"registering" a node. I also recommend one forces nodes that connect to 
use a password.
