[Dxspider-support] Running on a Beaglebone Black

Jose,

So sorry I took this long to get this onto the list. Here are the
instructions for installing perl on a Beaglebne Black. I use this perl to
run a node in my basement. I do not have this node on the internet. I also
have a 16GB thumb drive attached to the Beagleboard Black so there is enough
file system space to run DXSpider. I have a soft link from spider on the
the thumb drive to the root file system. You will have to run CPAN to
install the required perl modules but they will all install OK.

Beaglebone: Install perl

Perl if a very solid programming language that's been around for a long
time. Highly flexible, very easy to find documentation and examples and it’s
free! Beaglebone ships with a version that just doesn't quite cut it out of
the box though (Throws errors sometimes? Hard to install modules . I don't
know why). So I decided to show how to remove the existing perl
installation, download the source and compile yourself.

So let’s kick off by saying if you haven't backed up your system . do it!

Next we’ll remove the old installation, download the source, decompress it
and configure it. Try executing:

1 opkg remove perl* --force-depends --force-remove

2 wget http://www.cpan.org/src/5.0/perl-5.14.2.tar.gz

3 gzip -d ./perl-5.14.2.tar.gz

4 tar -xvf ./perl-5.14.2.tar

5 cd perl-5.14.2

6 ./Configure -d prefix=/usr/local/perl

Go make yourself a coffee. This takes a little while to process, towards the
end of the process you may be asked to press enter. Do it!

Next make:

# make

Maybe go for a walk this time . takes a fair bit longer.

# make install

Alright next we.re going to run CPAN and let it run it.s initial scripts:

# perl -MCPAN -e shell

If you get error saying something about /CPAN/MyConfig.pm and not returning
true do the following:

# echo "1;" > ~/.cpan/CPAN/MyConfig.pm

Now just keep pressing enter till you get a cpan prompt .cpan>. then type
exit!

So how many people still with me? I hope that was straight forward enough.
hope it helps.

Jim

Hi there Jim.

I'm interested to know how install the dxspider into this small pc boxes,
like rasperry pi and this beaglebone black.

I'm SysOp of 4M5DX cluster node. Right now it is offline because some
problems with the Internet connection. Right now is using Windows XP. I'm a
novice with all Linux OS.

But I'm interested to run the node in this small credit card size box with
open source OS

Thanks in advance!

If anyone is interested I figured out how to run the cluster software on the
Beaglebone Black (like a Raspberry Pi only newer).

Let me know and I’ll be happy to pass the information along.
