[Dxspider-support] MRTG installation on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Hello all,
first of all Happy New Year 2017 to all the readers !

I'm interested to install on my spider node IK5ZUK-6 (running on Ubuntu 
14.04 LTS server) the "web basedstatistics". Following the online 
instructions available on the spider's web site, I've installed the 
latest mrtg (apt-get installed mrtg), but unfortunately when I do the 
cmd (as root) "chmod 01777 /var/lock mrtg /var/lib/mrtg" I receive the 
following error:

root at ubuntuserver:~# chmod 01777 /var/lock mrtg /var/lib/mrtg
chmod: impossibile accedere a "mrtg": File o directory non esistente
root at ubuntuserver:~#

The error message translated is: "chmod: can not access "mrtg": File or 
directory not existing". Effectively, inside the system the /mrtg folder 
is not existing: do I need to create it manually ?

Please could someone give me some help ?
