Hi Mike,
Did your friend execute git —reset hard before issuing a git pull?
I also have a headless rpi4 so I ssh in as “pi”, execute a sudo su - sysop to switch user context to the sysop user, cd /spider; git —reset hard; git pull followed by a sudo reboot. Never have had a problem.
With the price of USB 3.1 SSD drives so cheap I’d ditch the SD10 card and go USB, much better I/O performance and increased reliability. I have one I am testing with 64 bit Debian 10 on the Raspberry PI. You create a UEFI partition and use Rufus to upload the installation image and the ethernet driver (not currently AFAIK supported). Since it started as a beta Debian 10 release I am monitoring it for updates and nonsuch. Would love to get off of the 32 bit rpi stuff and have access to the full repository.
YMMV,
73,
