Varies over time. Lately there have been changes less frequently than every month.

I would opt to check at least once a week, until the changes stabilise.

For a new sysop, how often should we check for updates?  Is part of a monthly patch cycle sufficient for most updates?

When updating dxspider on the same branch or changing branches, after finishing it is necessary to *reboot* the node for the changes to take effect.
You can verify the change by executing the sh /ver command before and after it.
