Rudy,
Frankly, I think I use a cluster network in another multiverse.
The fact that there is node software without developers, I don't think it's a point to consider to condition the rest of the network.
If it were for some, we would still be using MSDOS. Backwards compatibility has its limitations when you slow down security and evolution. Upgrade or die. I'll take the former.
In my case, there's nothing exciting about tracing nodes, rather it takes up a lot of my time, so much so that lately I haven't even picked up the microphone or the key. But at least I try to collaborate in cleaning up the ‘noise’.
As I mentioned a while ago, it is a good exercise (very didactic), to calculate the amount of packets that are generated on average, when we send a single spot to the network.
Lately we are seeing that there are users who have connected their skimmer to the user they have with their node, generating an avalanche of non-human spots that are pure ‘noise’.
Currently the network is subdivided into two ... let's say sub-networks: that of the human spots and that of the RBN/Skimmers. If this is so, it is because it is absurd to bradcast thousands and thousands of spots, which are rebroadcast and rebroadcast and rebroadcast again and again by almost every node.
Users have the tools to decide what kind of traffic they want to see, it doesn't make sense that we sysops have to be setting filters to not receive certain traffic, when they are already available and separated.
I do not believe at all that applying security policies is something that is done unconsciously, on the contrary, it is consistent with the times in which we live.
Surely you yourself have passwords with your bank, your mail server, ..., because surely they don't usurp many email addresses, do they?
I don't understand your position when you talk about DXSpider either. I read you on group.io saying that you always recommend CC Cluster, which I recognise is a good software. But your point of view for a DXSpider sysop is appreciated.
Users have more options than DXSpider. And with the knowledge that is spread around our community, I'm surprised there isn't more software available. Of course, we have to work at it. Did I say we? 🤔 Anyway, it's Friday.

I run a CC Cluster node. The software does not support passwords and therefore cannot comply with the request. I will remove partnering connections to anyone who requests it. No ifs and buts.
That said, IMHO, passwords are a solution to a problem that does not exist. Are end users actually complaining? What do they want?
Sure, it is exciting to track down this and that node, but the big picture is that the cluster network is working just fine. Human generated spots, compared to software generated spots, are a tiny fraction of the total number of spots, not even a rounding error. And the number of deliberately bad spots must be microscopic; has anyone quantified them? How many daily fraudulent spots are there? Look at https://pskreporter.info/cgi-bin/pskstats.pl to understand the volume of spots that do not originate from humans.
But let's assume for a moment that bad partners are a huge problem that needs to be solved immediately. How are you goin to ensure that ALL first, second, third level partners support passwords? Unless EVERYONE is requiring passwords, doing it inconsistently doesn't achieve anything to reduce the attack surface. According to DXCluster.info, there are 719 AR-Cluster, CC Cluster, and DXSpider nodes as of today.
Then let's take it a step further- somehow you figure out to only have DXSpider nodes in the network. This means that end users have no choice and must only connect to spiders. Doesn't sound very user friendly.
Again, I respect the decision of any node operator that would ask me to remove the peering arrangement.

Hello dear Partner:
I have several partners whose emails do not work or who didn’t answer.
In a few days CX2SA-8 DXSpider WILL NOT ACCEPT connections from partners without Login and Password.
Please send me a PRIVATE EMAIL with the suggested password.
Those nodes that do not meet this requirement will be removed without notice.
Thank you very much.
