Your assumption is that H represents the number of nodes the spots have
gone through before reaching you.
I think this assumption is wrong.
First, the hop count is DECREMENTED at each hop.
Second, the hop count to use while sending a spot is configurable.

Tracking the path is helpful to analyse from where the spots are coming in.
Analyzing logs from a few nodes you can understand what is the common entry
point.
