Then that is a problem in itself because both 6.1 and 6.2 comes with 5.00503 
as standard so how come you are still on 5.004?

I would upgrade to the latest perl for 6.2 which can be obtained from the 
nearest redhat mirror for updates to redhat 6.2.

I am actually thinking of putting the minimum requirement up to 5.005 as I no 
longer have any equipment still running 5.004.

The kernel version has nothing to do with it.
