You can connect to any type of cluster software currently in use. 
Spider has some additions that AK1A does not have, like the WCY beacon
for example but it works seamlessly in an AK1A environment.

TNC's, DRSI cards etc are a personal choice.  Whatever you use in Linux
needs to be able to run in kiss mode permanently but that is really the
only requirement.  Both your TNC's should be fine.

Have a look in /spider/html at install.html.  This was the original
installation guide and has some guidelines on setting up the ax25
utilities.  One of these days I will get round to reworking that page. 
You do not need AGW but some of the ax25 setup may be different for 2.4
kernels.
