[Dxspider-support] AX25 heartburn

John and Mike,

I am also about to get Linux AX.25 setup for use with DXspider. I had
it running several years ago using ax25-utils, however there are
several changes in the current software.

ax25-utils-2.1.42a is only for use with much older kernels than you
will find with RH 7.2. (i.e., it was written for kernel 2.1.42). 2.2
and 2.4 kernels should not use this. Instead you should be using
libax25, ax25-tools and (optionally) ax25-apps.

You may have been using an older version of the AX25-HOWTO. The newer
version 2.0, dated 19 September 2001 (Jeff Tranter has taken over from
Terry Dawson as maintainer) covers the use of AX25 with modern kernels.
I would expect that it would be available from Red Hat (I know Debian
has it in their HOWTO package), but if not, you can get it from
http://www.linuxdoc.org.

There is a mailing list pretty much devoted to Linux AX25 issues (send
a message to majordomo at vger.kernel.org with the words "subscribe
linux-hams", on a line in the message body, omitting the quotes).

Also you can find some good setup info at N8UR's website,
http://www.febo.com.
