Hi Hugh,
               Your question possibly best asked on the
Linux-hams distro but I can tell you that my spare cluster
box has 4 radio ports configured and running. Three directed
at serial ports / tnc's but no tnc's connected and the only
one used is an ethernet link. Doesn't seem to complain at
all.
