Jessie is fine, because the perl is new enough.

But you will need to use the cpanminus (cpanm) route.

Bear in mind that, if you don't like it you can revert back to the
'master' branch and then just carry on as you did before.  To make this
reversion easy, I recommend that you update your current system to the
latest version. In the event that it does not work, just 'git checkout
master' and restart.

I can see a revision the instructions already :-)

# update to the current HEAD of 'master'
git reset --hard
git pull

# Install cpamminus:

     sudo apt-get install cpanminus                     # this will like
be quite old (but still serviceable)
# or
     wget -O - https://cpanmin.us | perl - --sudo App::cpanminus
  # or
     sudo apt-get install curl
     curl -L https://cpanmin.us | perl - --sudo App::cpanminus

sudo apt-get install build-essential

sudo cpanm EV Mojolicious JSON JSON::XS Data::Structure::Util Math::Round

wait ....

Start up the node....

To revert:

Stop the node

git checkout master

Start the node.
